Cake and Popusas!

Hi family! How is everyone? I love getting updates from you.  Mom, thanks for being diligent and writing every week!  And I always enjoy grandma's notes.  Thank you!  The family reunion is coming up and I'm sad I will be missing it.  It's going to be a blast!

This week has been really good.  Last P-Day we had a quadruple birthday party (slash goodbye Elder Burke party - he got transferred), with a cake made by yours truly. Have a look at that cake and make sure you tell people what I pro I am, so that maybe I can have my own baking business when I get home.... anyyyyyways.  It was really good even though the frosting looked like blood.  You can't be picky as a missionary.  So we had a party, and learned to make popusas.  Does anybody know what they are?  I guess they are huge in El Salvador.  I attached a pic of Elder Guzman teaching me.  Put that on my cooking skills list along with the cake. There's also a pic of everyone blowing out candles - Elena is in there, along with Elder Hazeldine, Elder Burke, and my companion sister Wride.  Don't they look happy? Yep. Well, we made sure everyone got healthy doses of ice cream from the Bryer Baby (my 15 pound keg of ice cream), and there is still enough to feed a small continent.

In other news, there was a naughty word spray painted on a building right next to the church.  I mean, you walk out the main doors and this word hits you in the face.  So, being the good missionaries we are, we got a hold of some spray paint from a member and covered it up.

So this week we have Kristen and Jeremy's baptism coming up on Saturday!  We are really excited.  Kristen is just stellar.  I love her! I hope she doesn't go into labor before the baptism... or during the baptism...

To top it off, I think that she and Jeremy will get married before they get baptized.  So Saturday we have a baptism slash wedding. A baping, if you will.   Hopefully all will go well, so we will see!

I had some really neat experiences this week.  I'm learning how to better follow the spirit.  I've been focusing on one thing at a time, one thing I want to get better at, and really putting my heart into it.  I've been able to see some real results and it's miraculous.  I just love teaching so much.  We are working really hard to find people to teach, because once this baptism is over, we are back to square one.  I guess that's the nature of the mission, but it's great because I'm constantly learning and growing.

Oh yeah, I got yelled at by a baptist and a pentecostal l this week. People here like to yell.  And sit on their porches.  And sit on their porches and yell. But I digress. We went in to a lesson with a recent convert and her friends came over and just tried to hammer us.  They didn't, but they tried... my companion literally backed into a corner behind a china cabinet while I was left in the line of fire.  I feel like I handled it pretty well though, I finally just asked them to sit down and I pointed out that we were more the same than we were different.  We study out of the same bible, etc etc... people are weird.  Some people are just looking for a fight, and if you don't give it to them, then you win.

The musical fireside is coming along! Sometimes I feel like the whole thing is on my shoulders, and I'm not quite sure how that happened... but we postponed the date until August 12th so we could have more people participate.  The 29th was looking more and more like it would be the Nicole show.... and I DID NOT want that!  We are hoping this will be a great finding activity for us, and that we will be able to get some new people to teach out of it.

Well, I love you all. Thanks for your continued love and prayers and support!

Love,
Sister Skousen
